Dr Sunny Ochigbo studied at the University of Ilorin, Ilorin where he graduated with MB;BS degree. He trained at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Calabar, Nigeria where he obtained the Postgraduate fellowship in Paediatrics from the West African College of Physicians. He is currently an Associate Professor & Honorary Chief Consultant Pediatrician with the Department of Paediatrics, University of Calabar and University of Calabar Teaching hospital respectively. He also holds a Postgraduate diploma in Management from the University of Calabar. Dr Ochigbo has undergone many local and international trainings in Paediatrics, Neonatology as well as management and care of HIV infected patients. As a Lecturer (Associate Professor), Consultant Paediatric Neonatologist and Infectious disease specialist, he is involved in the training of medical students, care for patients as well as conduct of researches. He has over 13 years’ experience in treatment of HIV patients, Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT) and Pediatrics HIV/AIDS, he successfully coordinated the PMTCT and Pediatric programme for APIN/Harvard School of Public Health PEP FAR Nigeria programme for 5years. Dr Ochigbo supervised the implementation of clinically related project activities, coordinated projects with other implementing partners, States and Federal ministry of Health (FMOH) to train and develop relevant training materials/guidelines. He has consulted widely for several local and international bodies in Cross Rivers State of Nigeria, WHO, UNICEF, PEPFAR, Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH), GLOBAL FUND and African Network for the Care of Children living with HIV(ANECCA). Currently, he is a member of the Nigeria Polio Expert Committee(NPEC) supported by NPHCDA & WHO, member Nigeria National task team on ART. He is also a member of various professional associations and affiliate bodies ie, United States Government USG(APIN/Harvard PEPFAR), FMOH ART guidelines drafting committee; Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Medical & Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria. (MDCAN), Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU); Pediatric Association of Nigeria (PAN), Nigerian Society of Infectious Diseases(NISPID), Nigeria Society of Neonatal Medicine (NISONM) and International AIDS Society(IAS). Dr Ochigbo is an external Examiner to various tertiary institutions in Nigeria as well as an Examiner to the West African College of Physicians (Faculty of Paediatrics). He has supervised several resident doctors’ dissertations, co-authored many books including the famous Textbook on Paediatrics and Child Health in the Tropical Region. (2nd and 3rd editions) for medical students and Resident doctors in Paediatrics. In addition, he has published in many international and Local journals particularly in the field of Neonatology and infectious diseases (HIV medicine). Sunny , as fondly called is a devoted Catholic and happily married with three lovely children.
